CHERYL ANNE ARNOLD (nee FOGEL) Died peacefully in her sleep on June 4, 2013 at the Palliative Care Ward in St. Boniface Hospital, in the presence of her family. She was 64. Cheryl is survived by her loving husband Gordon, children Jeffrey (Kris), Melanie (Jeff), Candice (Marshall), Samantha, and by her father Frank and sister Ricky (Jeff). Cheryl is also survived by her grandchildren Ellie, Lisa, Nate, Jacob and Ethan. A woman of boundless energy, Cheryl was willing to tackle any job needed to support her family. During her career, she was a teacher, lab technician, editor of the Western Jewish Post, editor of the Whiteshell Echo, freelance journalist and university administrative assistant, most recently for the Duff Roblin Trailer at the University of Manitoba. Cheryl easily made friends and never failed to impress her co-workers at every job with her enthusiasm, energy and adaptability. Cheryl's greatest joy was doing things for and with her children, and in later years, with her grandchildren. She was active in many organizations in the community, including Hadassah WIZO, and the parent teacher council at Linden Meadows School. She supported with equal enthusiasm science fairs and community theatre, reflecting the diverse interests of her children. In 1987 she married Gordon Arnold, and by 1992, Samantha had arrived to fill out the blended family. Cheryl and Gordon were able to blend their Jewish and Christian faiths in a household dominated by love. They respected each other's faith and culture, and took great pleasure in celebrating all of the major holidays of both, teaching their children by example that love is the most important ingredient binding a family together. Her children were attentive to the end, right to the smallest detail. When Cheryl craved a bowl of gelato, her children found some at a restaurant several blocks from the hospital, and ran it back on foot so mom could have it fresh, before it melted. But that was how she raised them. No family want was too big, or too small, to escape her attention. A graveside service was held June 5 at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery. Pallbearers were Julius Dashefsky, Sidney Dashefsky, Jeff Schachter, Jeff Selby, Burton Tenenbein, and Marshall Tenenbein. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been set up in memory of Cheryl Arnold at the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, 204-477-7428. A scholarship will be established to assist children of single parents who require assistance at Gray Academy of Jewish Education.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I wanted to express my deepest condolences on the passing of Cheryl. I have known her for almost 30 years and have greatly appreciated her strength, tenacity, and perseverance in raising 3 children as a single mother and then being a loving wife to Gordon and a mom again to Samantha. She will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Garth Buhr (Friend) on: Aug 22, 2013

  • We were so shocked to read of Cheryl's passing. Sam and our daughter, Katy, went to Lindenmeadows from K-8 together and I remember Cheryl as having an enthusiastic, energetic approach to all activities. She was inspirational. Our deepest condolences to her family. - Posted by: Lesiuk family () on: Jun 11, 2013

  • Candace - your mom was the best mother of a grad date I ever met. 5 minutes with her convinced me that she was cool, fun, and could probably do about anything. And I think she'd be happy knowing that such traits were handed down to the daughter who, I could tell, always missed her so much when she wasn't in Winnipeg. God bless, - Posted by: Joe Langan (friend) on: Jun 10, 2013

  • I remember Cheryl from teacher's college. It seems like yesterday. My first contact with Cheryl was at a Bomber game. I had a terrible hangover, so you can imagine how her enthusiasm affected me. The next day I found out we were in the same class. Her exhuberance caused me to forego over-partying ever after. Thanks, Cheryl. - Posted by: Caroline (Lefteruk) Stevenson (former classmate) on: Jun 08, 2013

  • My sincere condolences to Cheryl's family on her passing. My relationship with Cheryl dates back to high school and although we didn't see each other often our paths did cross during the ensuing years. She was a woman of talent and extreme strength who will be missed. - Posted by: Eileen Curtis (friend) on: Jun 08, 2013
